Introduction

Mei's Dream, also known as Mei no Yume, looks like a typical RPG with four players in the game, just like Final Fantasy. The cover shows the elements of a standard RPG, with giant monsters, and the full cast of Mei and her companions. At first glance of the box, this really is a pure RPG game with a fantasy genre.

That is, until you open the box and realize that on the disc, Mei's wrapped in chains with blood on her face.

At this point, if you don't like horror games, you better put it back on the shelf.

Mei's Dream is my giant middle finger to all those who enjoy judging a book by its cover. The story sets out with Mei, a girl with psychic powers, dressed in a frilly suit and has a princess-like attitude, as the main character. At the start, Mei and her companions (who she calls her 'loyal subjects') enter one of the Big Bad's castles. Then Mei realizes something's wrong. In the corner of a room, there seems to be what seems to look like a computer bug. Mei is surprised she knows this, and gets engulfed by the bug.

As the screen proceeds to tell how Mei's adventures have been nothing but dreams, Mei slowly floats in a sea of white. The bug was implanted by a group of activists who want Mei out of there, due to human rights issues, and here starts her unpleasant adventure.

As she opens her eyes, she's greeted by a grubby, dank laboratory. She steps out of the Dream-Pod and looks around. Dark room, blood stained all over the walls, halls and rooms guarded by zombie cyborg scientists, failed clones of herself, and bloody, albeit small, Eldritch Abominations which lurk around, only directed by sound for they are blind. The rooms and halls are laced with death traps and obstacles which can only be removed by Mei using her psychic powers, which in turn deteriorate her health. The only time she can regain health in the 'real world' is by entering and staying in a Cryo-Pod for 8 hours, in which the player is locked out of the game for 30 minutes. and the player can resume from the last Cryo-pod he entered.  Mei has to run up and down the laboratory in search of Dream-Pods in order to get to the Dream World and obtain the 12 Aesops from the 12 various worlds. Using these Aesops, she can create a map which will allow her to escape the laboratory which is hidden from the outside world. Each Dream-Pod has a limited life, and will be out of commission once used until Mei goes to sleep in the Cryo-Pod. This story is about girl with psychic powers, granted eternal youth by a type of medicine that collaborated with her psychic abilities for the sake of prolonged study, trapped in an old, desolate laboratory, the research led by a mysterious, but now dead for 4 years, doctor: Dr. Pele Draco O'Phile.

Time consuming, technically no saves, permanent death and plenty of instant death traps around every corner. Welcome to Mei's Dream.
